Typhon was one of the greatest monsters in Greek mythology and the most dangerous creature to challenge Zeus directly. In Hesiod’s Theogony, he was born from Gaia, the Earth, and Tartarus, the deep abyss, after Zeus defeated the Titans. Typhon was almost impossible to picture properly. He had enormous strength, many serpent heads, flashing eyes and fire. His voices could sound like gods, roaring animals, hissing snakes and, strangely, even puppies. With Echidna, Typhon also became the father of a huge monster family including Cerberus, Orthus and the Hydra.
Typhon did not simply attack a city or wait in a cave for a hero. He challenged Zeus for control of the whole cosmos. Hesiod describes their battle as so enormous that the land, sea, sky and even the Underworld shook. Zeus attacked with thunder and lightning until Typhon was burned and defeated. Other ancient writers made the battle even longer. In one version Typhon actually overpowers Zeus and removes the sinews from his hands and feet. Hermes and another helper recover them, allowing Zeus to return to the fight. Eventually the monster is defeated and trapped beneath the Earth.
Different places claimed Typhon was buried beneath different mountains, especially volcanic regions. Mount Etna in Sicily became one famous location, with eruptions and earthquakes explained as signs of the monster moving below. Other stories gave Typhon a different mother or even described the Olympian gods fleeing from him in animal forms. Greek myths rarely agree perfectly! In art, Typhon could have a human upper body, wings and enormous coiling snakes instead of legs. His exact appearance matters less than what he represents. The Titans were an older generation fighting to keep power. Typhon is something wilder: fire, storms, snakes and uncontrolled destruction all thrown at Zeus at once. If Zeus is king of the gods, Typhon is the test that proves whether he can actually keep the job.
