Phoebe

The Bright Titan of Prophecy

Title

Phoebe was one of the twelve Titans, the ancient children of Gaia and Uranus. Her name is connected with brightness and radiance, but she was not actually the main goddess of the Moon. That was Selene. Phoebe is sometimes mixed up with Moon goddesses because her name sounds bright and shining, but her most important role in the Greek family tree comes through her children and grandchildren. Her partner was the Titan Coeus, and together they had two daughters called Leto and Asteria.

Title

Leto became extremely important because she was the mother of the twins Apollo and Artemis. Apollo grew into a god connected with music, prophecy and archery, while Artemis became goddess of the hunt and wilderness. Phoebe’s other daughter, Asteria, became the mother of Hecate, a mysterious goddess connected with magic and crossroads. That makes Phoebe the grandmother of Apollo, Artemis and Hecate. Suddenly this quieter Titan has a very impressive family! If Greek mythology had family photographs, hers would contain some extremely famous faces.

Title

Phoebe was also connected with prophecy. One ancient story says that the famous oracle at Delphi originally belonged to Gaia. It then passed to Themis, then Phoebe, who eventually gave it to her grandson Apollo as a birthday gift. Another tradition tells a different story in which Apollo takes control of Delphi after defeating the serpent Python. Greek myths often have more than one version, especially when stories were told in different places for hundreds of years. Phoebe does not have a famous monster battle or magical weapon of her own, so I think the easiest way to remember her is through two things: prophecy and family. She was a bright Titan who stood between the oldest generation of gods and some of the most famous Olympian-era gods who came later.
