Oceanus

The Titan River Around the World

Title

Oceanus was one of the twelve Titans, but he was also something much bigger. The ancient Greeks imagined a gigantic freshwater river flowing all the way around the edge of the known world, and that river was Oceanus. This is a little different from the oceans we know today. Oceanus was not simply another sea god like Poseidon. Poseidon ruled the sea, while Oceanus represented the enormous world-encircling river beyond the lands people knew. His name eventually gave us the word ‘ocean’, which is one reason the two ideas can be confusing.

Title

Oceanus was partnered with the Titan Tethys, and together they had an absolutely enormous family. Hesiod describes thousands of river gods and thousands of daughters called Oceanids. These children were connected with rivers, springs and watery places all over the mythical world. Some Oceanids became important characters in their own right. Styx, for example, was connected with the sacred river of the Underworld, while Metis became famous for her wisdom and her connection with Zeus. If Oceanus really had to remember the names of thousands of children, I hope somebody made him a very large family tree!

Title

Oceanus is also unusual because he does not appear as one of the main Titans fighting Zeus in the Titanomachy. While many defeated Titans were punished, Oceanus continued to flow around the world. He even appears in an adventure involving Heracles. The hero was travelling far west and crossed the waters of Oceanus using a golden cup connected with Helios. When Oceanus made the waves rough, Heracles pointed his bow at the water until the Titan calmed down. I am not sure I would threaten a river that surrounds the whole world, but Heracles was unusually confident! Oceanus is best remembered as an ancient, enormous and mysterious watery boundary, rather than simply Poseidon with a different name.
