Nephthys belonged to the great divine family of Heliopolis. She was a daughter of Geb and Nut and the sister of Osiris, Isis and Set. She was often described as the partner of Set, although Egyptian myths do not give her one simple family story in every period.
Her most important role appears in the story of Osiris. After Set kills Osiris, Isis searches for her husband's body. Nephthys joins her sister in mourning and protection. The two goddesses become a pair who guard the dead, stand beside coffins and help with the magical restoration of Osiris. Their cries of grief were echoed in Egyptian funeral traditions.
Nephthys could be shown as a woman wearing the hieroglyphic signs for her name on her head. These signs are often explained as a house or temple enclosure with a basket above it. Her Egyptian name, Nebet-Het, is usually translated as 'Lady of the House' or 'Mistress of the Enclosure'.
She was also connected with protection during childbirth and with guarding the canopic jars that held organs during mummification. Together with Isis, Neith and Selket, she formed a group of four protective goddesses around the dead. Nephthys is not usually the loudest character in Egyptian mythology, but she appears whenever loyalty, mourning and protection are needed. Her importance comes from standing beside others at their most vulnerable moments.
Ancient Egyptian funeral art often places Nephthys at one end of a coffin or shrine and Isis at the other, creating a protective pair around the dead person. She was also associated with the goddess Neith, Selket and Isis in guarding the four Sons of Horus and the organs they protected. Nephthys was especially linked with Hapi, the baboon-headed protector of the lungs. Priests and mourners could take the roles of Isis and Nephthys during funeral ceremonies, turning divine grief into a model for human mourning. Her mythology therefore connected family loyalty with the practical rituals Egyptians believed helped the dead survive safely.
