Hephaestus

God of Fire and the Forge

Title

Hephaestus was the Greek god of fire, metalworking and the forge. He was the greatest craftsperson among the gods and could make things nobody else could even imagine. Ancient stories disagree about his parents. Some say Hera had him by herself, while others make Zeus his father too. Hephaestus was disabled and walked with difficulty. Different myths also tell different stories about how he fell from Mount Olympus. In one, Hera throws him down because she is ashamed of him. In another, Zeus throws him after Hephaestus tries to defend Hera during an argument. Either way, Hephaestus eventually returns and becomes one of the most useful gods on Olympus.

Title

His workshop was filled with fire, metal and incredible inventions. Hephaestus made palaces for the gods, jewellery, thrones and powerful weapons. In the Iliad, he creates a magnificent new shield for the hero Achilles, covered with tiny scenes of cities, farms, stars, dancing and battles. He also makes golden servants that can move and help him in his workshop. They sound amazingly like ancient robots! One funny story says Hephaestus once sent Hera a beautiful throne that trapped her when she sat down. Nobody could free her, so Dionysus eventually brought Hephaestus back to Olympus to release her.

Title

Hephaestus’s love life was not particularly successful. In the Odyssey he is married to Aphrodite, but she secretly meets Ares. Hephaestus discovers them and creates an invisible metal net that traps the pair. Instead of trying to beat Ares in a fight, he uses the skill he is best at. Other traditions give Hephaestus a different wife, so the myths do vary. The Romans later called him Vulcan. I think Hephaestus is one of the most interesting Olympians because his real superpower is making things. Zeus may have the thunderbolt and Athena may have brilliant plans, but when the gods need impossible armour, magical machinery or something nobody else can build, they go to Hephaestus.
