Norse Runes

What are runes?

Runes were letters. Norse people carved them into stone, wood, bone and metal. During the viking age, the main alphabet was the 16-letter Younger Futhark.

Fun fact: "Futhark" comes from the sounds of the first six runes.

Write Your Name in Runes

Enter your name to see its sounds represented with the 16 runes of the Younger Futhark. The Vikings used fewer runes than we use letters, so one rune could represent several different sounds.

This is a modern sound-based approximation. Viking Age spelling could vary, and Younger Futhark used one rune for several sounds.
