Egyptian Hieroglyphics

Pictures with different jobs.

Hieroglyphics were used in ancient Egypt for thousands of years. The signs could represent objects, sounds, words or ideas, and were painted or carved onto monuments, tombs, temples and everyday objects..

The Rosetta Stone

The Rosetta Stone is one of the most important discoveries in the story of ancient Egypt. It was found by French soldiers in 1799 near the Egyptian town of Rosetta. Carved into its dark stone is the same official message written in three different scripts: Egyptian hieroglyphics, Demotic and Ancient Greek.

Scholars could already read Ancient Greek, so they compared it with the two Egyptian versions. This gave them vital clues about what the mysterious hieroglyphics meant. In 1822, the French scholar Jean-François Champollion announced that he had worked out how much of the writing system functioned.

The Rosetta Stone did not unlock every hieroglyph overnight, but it provided the key that scholars desperately needed. Thanks to it, experts could finally begin reading temple walls, tomb inscriptions and ancient Egyptian records and allow voices from thousands of years ago to be heard again.

A hieroglyph could show an object, spell a sound, write a whole word or give a clue to a word’s meaning. The signs below are some of the most recognisable examples. Their exact job depended on how they were used in an inscription.

Write Your Name in Hieroglyphics

Enter your name to see its sounds represented using ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. This is a fun modern approximation, because ancient Egyptian was not written in exactly the same way as English.

Ancient Egyptian usually left out many vowel sounds, so this uses the closest available signs rather than an exact ancient spelling.
